Ranked first in the Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index in 2024 and 2025, over half of the city’s electricity comes from renewables, and a solid 88% of hotel rooms have sustainability certifications. Helsinki’s also been awarded the Green Destinations certificate in 2025 as the first large city in the world, reflecting Helsinki’s high level of sustainability performance as a destination. Helsinki’s goal is to reduce GHG emissions by 85% from 1990 levels by 2030, and the city is committed to reducing emissions across all activities—tourism and beyond.
